Cable Flip Top Mittens

Cable Flip Top Mittens
5mm needles, knitted flat, worsted weight yarn
KFB= knit into the front and back of the same stitch
K2tog= knit 2 together
cable pattern= 8x8 with cable on row 7

Right Mitten - cast on 32
  • 1x1 rib for 2"
  • K32
  • K18, P8, K6
  • K13, KFB, K4, KFB, K13 (34st)
  • K20, P8, K6
  • K14, KFB, K4, KFB, K14 (36st)
  • K22, P8, K6
  • K6, C4B, C4F, K1, KFB, K4, KFB, K15 (38st)
  • K24, P8, K6
  • K16, KFB, K4, KFB, K16 (40st)
  • K26, P8, K6
  • K17, KFB, K4, KFB, K16 (42st)
  • K28, P8, K6
  • K42
  • K28, P8, K6
  • K6, C4B, C4F, K28
  • K17, K8 and place on holder for thumb, K5, P8, K6
  • K17, cast on 2, K17 (36st)
  • continue pattern until after row 3 of 5th cable repeat
  • 1x1 rib for first 18 stitches (bottom of gap)
  • 3 more rows of rib, turning work so that only these 18 stitches are knit
  • cast off rib using stretchy cast off
  • continue with stitches on needle, K4, P8, K6
  • K18, cast on 18 using contrast yarn then knit these new 18 (for top of gap rib later)
  • K22, P8, K6
  • continue pattern until after row 6 of 6th cable
  • K2tog, K4, C4B, C4F, K2, K2tog, K2tog, K14, K2tog (32st)
  • K19, P8, K5
  • K2tog, K12, K2tog, K2tog, K12, K2tog (28st)
  • K16, P8, K4
  • K2tog, K10, K2tog, K2tog, K10, K2tog (24st)
  • K13, P8, K3
  • K2tog, K8, K2tog, K2tog, K8, K2tog (20st) 
  • K2tog, K6, K2tog, P2tog, P6, K2tog (16st)
  • hold these stitches for grafting
  • pick up the 18 stitches for top of gap and remove contrast yarn
  • 1x1 rib for 4 rows
  • cast off using stretchy cast off
  • pick up 8 stitches held for thumb
  • KFB, K6, KFB (10st)
  • KFB, K8, KFB (12st)
  • K12 for 1.5-2" depending on your thumb size
  • K2tog, K2tog, K4, K2tog, K2tog (8st)
  • K8
  • K2tog, K2tog, K2tog, K2tog (4st)
  • K4
  • pull yarn through stiches to synch up top of thumb
  • sew thumb seam and attach to mitten body where needed
  • graft the top of the mitten together and sew side seam
  • attach ribbing at gap to side of mitten body and top and bottom so it kind of looks like a mouth
Left Mitten - cast on 32
  • 1x1 rib for 2"

  • K13, KFB, K4, KFB, K13 (34st)
  • K6, P8, K20
  • K14, KFB, K4, KFB, K14 (36st)
  • K6, P8, K22
  • K15, KFB, K4, KFB, K1, C4B, C4F, K6 (38st)

  • K16, KFB, K4, KFB, K16 (40st) 
  • K6, P8, K26
  • K17, KFB, K4, KFB, K17 (42st)

  • K17, cast on 2, K17 (36st)
  • continue pattern until after row 3 of 5th cable
  • K6, P8, K4, then 1x1 rib for last 18 stitches
  • 1x1 rib for 3 more rows of these 18 stitches
  • cast off using stretchy cast off
  • cast on 18 using contrast yarn, then knit all 36 stitches of row
  • continue pattern until after row 6 of 6th cable
  • K2tog, K14, K2tog, K2tog, K2, C4B, C4F, K4, K2tog (32st)
  • K5, P8, K19
  • K2tog, K12, K2tog, K2tog, K12, K2tog (28st)
  • K4, P8, K16
  • K2tog, K10, K2tog, K2tog, K10, K2tog (24st)
